鲜奶小方 (Cream Cake)

Lunch @ "德大西菜社" (De Da Western Food Restaurant), an old-school Shanghainese Western (海派西餐) restaurant.

'Old world' charm - this sort of thick cream filled/lathered cakes have almost disappeared from Singapore - they used to reign supreme in the 70s and 80s before a 'new age' of dessert awareness swept them all 'under the carpet' of time.

Here, the locals love their cakes slathered thick with heavy cream that many times, it is more cream than cake! (My stomach churns every time I see them).

I finally found a version in the bakery annex of the restaurant that is actually more cake than cream....I just wish that the syrupy glaze was more generous - I used to lick the glaze off first....a little slice of "extinct" cake, still very much alive in Shanghai, for a little bit of childhood nolstagia.
