雪菊汤圆 (Chrysanthemum Filling Glutinous Rice Balls)
Glutinous Rice Balls (汤圆) is a traditional Chinese (hot) dessert, consumed mainly during the 15th day of Chinese New Year (元宵) or on Winter Solstice Day (冬至).
In China, the filling had experienced the greatest evolution of flavours and taste, and this year, flowers became the flavour du-jour, after a run of fruit flavours (yes, including Durian) and brown flavours (yes, including Coffee).
The 5 floral flavours are Lily (百合), Osmanthus (桂花), Jasmine (茉莉), Rose (玫瑰) and Snow Chrysanthemum (雪菊).
This version, while containing standard edible chrysanthemum {Chrysanthemum morifolium or Chrysanthemum indicum}, also contains real petals of Snow Chrysanthemum {Sanvitalia procumbens} also known as the Creeping Zinnia. It is supposedly beneficial to health with claims of anti-inflammatory properties, functional aspects of treating insomnia as well as to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
As taste goes, it was full-on floral chrysanthemum. No doubts about it (grin)
