Wife Pastry/Sweetheart Cake (老婆饼)

"Wife Pastry" or "Lo Po Peng" is a traditional Cantonese pastry with flaky and thin skin made with winter melon, almond paste, and sesame, and spiced with five spice powder. There are many versions available in Hong Kong but I am partial to this brand.

 

The filling is mild, sweet. smooth and gelantinous. In the Hang Heung variety, the sesame and the five spice powder is a lot more muted, while the winter melon and the white lotus seed paste are more accentuated and it is this difference that I enjoyed their version a lot more.
