Malaysian Laksa
Dinner @ "Starling", a cocktail bar, serving Southeast Asian theme food.
The Laksa earned a rave review in a magazine but alas there was no 'fresh laksa leaves' to be seen. Compared to the versions back home in Singapore, this probably came closest. The broth was missing some extra coconut milk oomph but it was decadently rich with the taste and bites of dried shrimps, which was a most welcoming surprise!
Starling also uses thick rice vermicelli, instead of the wheat noodles found in most other versions in Shanghai. The Laksa was adorned generously with seafood - fish balls, slices of fish cakes and prawns but the prawns were the frozen variety and the fish balls and fish cake slices were a tad on the salty side. The fried tofu (tau pok) pieces and ramen-style boiled eggs were great though.
