杏仁茶 (Almond Tea)

The version from "顺兴记".

 

Technically, this is not tea.

Technically, it is not even made from almonds!

 

It is in fact, a sweetened brew prepared from grounded apricot seeds (南杏 & 北杏), which in traditional Chinese medicine, are usually prescribed in combo, to relieve cough and phlegm ailments.

 

The aroma and taste is dominated by a chemical called Benzaldehyde, which is also found in bitter almond, which probably caused the naming error. Benzaldehyde has a medicinal but sweetish fruity aroma; people who likes it, like myself, love it. Folks who dislike it, will not like such products.
