Bul Dak Bal (Fire Chicken Feet)
(Quality of photograph compromised by the usage of mobile phone)
"Fire Chicken Feet" is a popular dish, enjoyed with copious amounts of beer and Soju. I like the slightly elastic crunch of the de-boned chicken feet which gave way to a softer and slightly gelantinous (collagen-rich) interior.
The phenomenon of the "Bul Dak" exploded in South Korea almost a decade ago but is now a waning trend. It was believed the fad started from a supposed belief that consumption of food rich in capsaicin benefits the body by relieving stress.
While I love spicy food, the heat of the Bul Dak dishes was simply off the chart, so much so, it obscured the taste of the ingredients and robbed the dish of every other character except for extreme spicy heat.
