Black Thorn Durian Snowskin Mooncake

The offering from "Durian Powerhouse" Goodwood Park Hotel this year for the Mooncake/Lantern Festival.

Black Thorn Durian seems to be the new "Musang King", having usurped the "Musang King" in popularity these days. Buddy and I decided to chance it and bought a pair each to try.

The black skin is obviously coloured with bamboo charcoal, so popular is the rage these days is black in food. As my other mate in Shanghai remarked, and so is the fake Lake Gold colouring - it kinda reminded me of the old Chinese but Christian tombstones of the past...

...and I understand the tombstone look after one bite - the Durian taste was mild (while the real Black Thorn Durian was reputed to have a strong, robust and bitter-sweet taste).

R.I.P Taste of Black Thorn Durian.

I could taste the ever omnipresence of the starchy but impotent Thai Durian in this creation. There were even chunks of it in the filling. It may work immaculately in the inimitable Durian cakes and Durian puffs but to use it as a filler for a Durian mooncake, purported made with another type of Durian, I seriously felt cheated.

Not worth the close to S$50 a pair price tag.
