甜不辣 (Taiwan Style Fried Fish Cakes)

Snacking @ "东门小吃", an eatery featured in Taipei in the High Speed Train Magazine.

The Chinese name literally translated as "Sweet, Not Spicy", although the name is probably a mispronunciation of the Japanese word of "Tempura".

The Taiwanese loves these as snacks - and they are served up in various ways.

Here, the shop had served the fried fish cakes, slathered in a thick gravy, rich with the robustness of Katsuobushi Dashi. Almost fishy; almost phenolic and decadently umami.

I am not fan of anything fish - but this, I find most pleasant and the magazine deserved credit for featuring it.
