Rice Dumplings With Date Filling

Henan seems to have a sizable Muslim minority. This is street food - a street vendor, clearly of the Muslim faith was peddling these steamed glutinous rice dumplings.

Unwrapped, the dumplings were served with a generous dusting of plain sugar. In each dumpling, there is a single sweet date.

Quite honestly, I have never tasted dumpling with date filling - it's never seen in Southeast Asia - but it seems to be quite common in China, as mentioned by my travelling mate.

Also, I have never seen dumpling wrapped in leaves of such a colour, as we generally use the green pandan leaves in Southeast Asia but it seems lotus leaves were used here instead.
