Bilimbi {Averrhoa bilimbi}
A common tree along the Equator - the fruits bloom via cauliflory - whereby flowers and fruits literally grow out of the trunks.
I was visiting a Traditional Men's Hut on Babeldoab, where in the gardens, were 3 trees literally pregnant (almost bursting) with fresh bilimbi fruits. My guide was gleefully collecting them to bring home to his wife.
These fruits are very acidic and thus are commonly used as acidulants in cooking, especially among the Malays and Indians back home in Singapore. They are also made into relishes, chutneys and jams, although generally the Chinese in Singapore does not use this fruit much.
