柚子参 (Preserved Pomelo)

A medicine and also a snack, believe it or not.

I didn't see it in the north, but they appeared quite frequently in southern Taiwan.

Basically, these are preserved pomelos but prepared by hollowing the pomelos first, and then cooking the pulp with honey, malt and Chinese medicinal herbs (such as Licorice and dried orange peels etc) and then pouring the paste back into the hollow pomelo shell. Further processing takes place to dry and firm up the paste.

There are many stalls selling these. The pomelos are sliced open and then cubed. The preserved content are said to be good for sore throats, flu, coughs etc. One just need to pop a cube or 2 from time to time (like a medicine) and kinda suck on the cubes like a lozenges.

The cubes tasted like dried fruits with a slight medicinal herbal taste. Sweet with a slight bitter finish. Not too offending at all but I think one needs to enjoy the taste of dried fruit to enjoy these.
