碗粿 (Steamed Savoury Rice Cakes)
This is the version from "森茂碗粿".
This dish has almost disappeared from Singapore with the passing of the older generation. Here in Tainan, it is thriving, with several competing chains, and this one, with the walls decked full of pictures of celebrities, as well as 2 Presidents of Taiwan, is doing brisk business.
My mate and myself popped in way before dinner. We are already struggling with a full stomach of food, after a day of culinary adventuring. But I really wanted to taste this dish. (The last time I tasted it in Singapore was almost a decade ago)
It didn't disappoint. The rice cake is almost pudding like, soft and wobbly, hidden below a sea of soysauce base gravy. And under the rice cake, is a delightful well of alliaceous minced pork.
Rustic as it was, it was gratifyingly satisfying.
