棺材板 (Creamy Filling Toast)

Snacking @ "赤崁棺材板", almost a culinary institution in Tainan.

These type of toasts with filling were first made famous in Tainan, before it became popular throughout Taiwan. The Chinese name is rather morbid - translated, they are called "Coffins"....which is rather appropriate, considering it is a thick toast, with the bready inside dug out and then filled, with a liquid creamy filling containing mixed vegetables and chunks of meat. A "lid" is then placed over the opening before serving, rather similar to say, a coffin.

I am not sure how a real coffin taste like (touch wood) but this snack was spectacular. The filling is supple, umami and mouthwatering. I can understand why this shop has been standing for 70 years and has the walls plastered to the ceiling with newspaper clippings and photos of celebrities.
