Deodeok Gui (Spicy Grilled Deodeok Roots)

Part of the Icheon Rice Meal.

 

Deodeok {Codonopsis lanceolata} is a type of Ginseng. Here, it is flavoured with a spicy seasoning and then lightly grilled before serving.

 

It is crunchy, almost like eating a tougher drier version of radish? It has very mild earthy notes, considering that it is related to the Ginseng. Certainly more enjoyable without all the medicinal characters.
