Dukbokki (Korean Sweet & Spicy Rice Cakes)
A very common street food in Korea, this is a popular Korean snack made from soft rice cake, fish cake and sweet red chili sauce (Gochujang).
The sauce/gravy is almost universally sweet, savoury and spicy, which is a perfect marriage against the blandness of the rice cakes.
My first introduction to this dish was years ago when my then colleague took me to sample the taste of Korea through a number of street food and Dukbokki left a lasting impression.
This version was from the Food Street at the basement of my Hotel. The flavour was a tad askewed as it was missing the much needed sweet balance. It was fairly spicy and came with a strong whiff of chilli powder. I was quite disappointed.
