炸大虾和里脊猪排套餐 (Fried Big Prawn & Pork Loin Katsu Set)

Dinner @ Tontaro (豚太郎) Japanese Restaurant.

My new fave! Hiding in one obscure corner in the mall next to my apartment, it opened in September but I didn't even realise it was there until this month!

Restaurants in Shanghai opened and closed like those zombies in "Walking Dead" - now you see them, now you don't. Business isn't really booming (probably because of the horrible corner it occupies) but the Katsu sets it serves are really good and authentic - really remind me of those I had in Japan. (My biggest peeve in China is always about Chinese food masquerading as something else). The Worcestershire sauce provided is really spot on; add some mustard and it's perfecto.

The fried pork loin with panko is chunky, running very slightly along the edge of dryness but somehow managed to fall back on the side of succulence. The fried prawn with panko is a tad powdery in texture, which is always concerning but the prawn head is clean and remarkably flavourful with the richness of roe.

The set includes a bowl of rice (lightly dusted with purplish plum powder), pickled radishes, pickled cucumbers and miso soup.

I really really hope this restaurant survives and not become another fallen zombie....sigh!
