We just did Matthiessen State Park in December, but on the same day I made that image of tree roots, I moved about 500' upstream to the headwaters of the creek that runs through the Dells. Above this waterfall sits Matthiessen Lake. It spills over this waterfall - called Lake Falls - to meander over about a mile - eventually landing in the Vermillion River just before it joins the Illinois River. It's gloriously wet country.

When the lake is flowing, you can't get very close to the base of the falls with a camera as the spray is significant. But if you don't mind getting wet - you can walk right up to it. But the fun shots bring the canyon walls into the scene. Matthiessen is my favorite Illinois park for waterfalls, and it's kind nice to live only about 50 miles away from here.
