Our year in Iceland enters its last four months - and we start taking a decidedly cooler theme - starting with the famous Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon in southeastern Iceland. The Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier sits on the opposite side of shot - a mile or so across this placid lagoon. Ice calves from the glacier and eventually works its way across the lagoon to a short channel that dumps straight into the ocean.
The colors on the ice are fantastic and the sizes are all over the place. Some ice chunks sit for years in the lagoon, and some move somewhat quickly. The lake/lagoon is fairly new - forming largely in the late 1940s. The glacier used to sit a short distance from the ocean but has now retreated almost a mile. But all the ice eventually makes it to the channel, so from there it appears quite crowded. Beyond this pileup however, it's somewhat more sparse.
