Bird on a Branch
A Bay-headed Tanager (Tangara gyrola) perches quietly on a branch inside the Tropical Rainforest Aviary at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington. Native to the humid forests of Central and South America—from Costa Rica through Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil, and north to Trinidad—this vibrant songbird is known for its striking coloration. Most individuals are bright green with a rich reddish-brown head, though some populations display vivid blue underparts. Unlike the similar Rufous-winged Tanager, the Bay-headed always has green wings. It forages for fruit in the forest midstory and canopy, often joining mixed-species flocks.
