Into the Forest
A stand of Japanese red cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) grows in the Parque Florestal do Cabouca Velha on the slopes on the east side of the the central volcano on Faial Island in the Azores. Because much of Faial's original forests were cleared in the 15th and 16th centuries for agriculture and pasture, today's forests are largely composed of introduced species like these. Enclaves of native evergreen forests and shrublands persist but mostly in less accessible, higher-elevation areas. The park is located in the Frequesia (parish) de Salaõ.
