House Made of Basalt Blocks

This structure, located among the vineyards near Criação da Velha on the Island of Pico in the Azores, is typical of homes in the region. It was built using blocks of basalt, a volcanic rock. While some structures in the area are coated with plaster and painted, this one has been left in its natural state.

Pico is known for its rich vinicultural heritage.. The vineyards surrounding Criação da Velha are part of a protected cultural landscape in Portugal and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

.

The volcanic flow, where the vineyards grow at Criação da Velha, dates back approximately 1,500 years. The basalt blocks used to construct this house were likely sourced from local quarries on the island.
