Amaryllis
Commonly called amaryllis, this cultivar of the genus Hippeastrum blooms at my sister-in-law's house during the Christmas season. This flower is a member of the family Amaryllidaceae and for many years there was confusion over the generic names for flowers in this family. There are similar looking flowers that belong to the genus Amaryllis but the showy flowers sold in North America during Christmas are not of this genus. Amaryllis, which is native to South Africa, usually prefer to be grown outdoors. Hippeastrum, on the other hand, has been intensely bred and cultivated to produce large, colorful, showy flowers that can bloom indoors at Christmas time. This genius is native to tropical in subtropical North America from Argentina to Mexico and across the Caribbean. Hippeastrum means "knight's star” in Ancient Greek.
