On the Edge
The Hudson Ranch Road (formerly known as Cerro Nordeste Road) runs along a rim of cliffs and slopes on the southwest corner of the San Joaquin Valley where the Temblor Range and the San Emigdio Mountains meet. The San Emigdio Mountains are part of the Transverse Range . The San Andres fault runs in the drainage between the forested ridge and the barren ridge at the upper right of the photo. The photo was takem from the Los Padres National Forest but the hills on the Horizon are in the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge. This photo was taken from Ventura County but the cliffs and most of the area in the photo lie in Kern County. The name of the road can be a bit confusing. For years the road was known as Cerro Nordeste Road for the peak just to the south. A few years ago the road name was changed by Kern County to Hudson Ranch Road. The road was not named for one of the famous ranches named Hudson in California but at the request of a resident family.
