Thomas Hunter Church

TO THE GLORY OF GOD

And in the memory of

Rev Thomas Hunter (1827-1857),

His wife Jane and their Infant Child who died on

9th July 1857 at the hands of Rebels.

Escaping from Sialkot Jail Thomas Hunter was

a village boy from Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

He became a Pastor and was convinced that God

was calling him to Sialkot. He was sent in 1855 by

The Church of Scotland as the First Missionary

to the Punjab. On reaching Bombay, He was asked to to work

at a College temporarily and he met Muhammad Ismail

who taught him Urdu Language.

As soon as It was convenient, He set out on the long journey to Sialkot with his wife , baby and

Muhammad Ismail . He took up residence on the Mall near the Cathedral, which was consecrated in

January 1887
