Sunset over the Pomona Valley in Southern California with the crescent moon and Venus and Jupiter hanging below. December 1, 2008. I understand this alignment won't happen again until 2052. I set up my tripod at the north end of Haven Avenue in Alta Loma and waited for the sunset and the sky to darken.
For this shot, I wanted to do something more than just capture the moon and the two planets. I wanted to have a nice composition that included those elements. I'm glad people like the result.
Wikipedia says:
On 1 December 2008, Venus, Jupiter, and the crescent moon converge in a rare conjunction to form a tight triangle in the evening after sunset, visible worldwide. It was similar to a happy "V" face, or a frowning face.

This moon and planetary alignment occurred again in June 2015.
The color in the sky is called an afterglow. Wikipedia defines it is as a broad high arch of whitish or rosy light appearing in the sky due to very fine particles of dust suspended in the high regions of the atmosphere. An afterglow may appear above the highest clouds in the hour of deepening twilight, or reflected from the high snowfields in mountain regions long after sunset. The particles produce a scattering effect upon the component parts of white light.
