Summer Project Entry

the Raleigh group Summer Project was judged, tonight (Friday), and therefore all our entries are freed up to bear our names and be uploaded for all to see.

Here.. is mine.

We had a month to create and execute our entry, limited to one print. One of the breakthrough areas for me, personally, was to spend a whole month with a concept and begin building it right away, evolving it over the month's time, instead of the last minute brinksmanship I'm used to. I did leave open the choice of what to go with, but this particular concept had some sticking power for me, so it won out along about week 2.5, so I got busy with it.

I would say that, given Too much time, it's so easy to overwork an idea, but it's useful to be able to build a concept illustration to its realization. Along the way, there were lessons and practice of new Photoshop skills, which I may find useful in the future, too.

I created the smaller inset images using other self-portraits as Photoshop "Smart Objects" placed in the base image, which, too, was a Smart Object, enabling me to swap it out a couple of times for new combinations, resizing without losing any quality in the process. Each row of the insets is a group of smart object images, and can be reconfigured at will for other layout possibilities. I had been wanting to get familiar with Both the layer groupings and smart objects, and it made it much easier to retweak and retain the quality in the process.
