Ais Gill Summit

A rare morning southbound steam working along the Settle & Carlisle did not generate the hoped for sunshine. Instead it was bright, but the dark cloud gathering over Wild Boar Fell in the background had more than a hint of rain on the way, which meant a speedy dash back to the car. The train was a Compass Railtours charter 'The Fylde Coast Express', 1Z43 0518 Kilmarnock - Blackpool North, which was steam-hauled on 22nd May 2013 by West Coast Railway's Stanier 'Black 5' No. 44932 from Carlisle. Hidden behind the train is a large sign proclaiming this is 'Ais Gill Summit 1169 feet above sea level'. Copyright John Whitehouse - all rights reserved
