Ellensburg Carnegie Library

Description: Katherine Murray sold the lots on North Ruby Street to the City of Ellensburg for $1.00 in 1907. Her stipulation was that there must always be a public library at this location or the property would revert to her heirs. After obtaining a $10,000 grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation for construction of a library, the Ellensburg Carnegie Public Library was completed in late 1909. The library located at 209 N. Ruby Street was opened on January 20, 1910 with Mrs. John B. Davidson as the first librarian. The large building on the right was the Lloyd's Opera House on the corner of Pine and Third. The Wipple family's large home on the left sat next to the library until the early 1980s. The young woman in the photograph is identified only as Clara. Postcard titled: "No. 13 Library, Washington." Handwritten note in ink dated Sept. 19, 1913 Seattle, Wash. Written to My Dear Sister from Your Loving Sister Tine.
