New southbound SR 99 foundation piles
Highway 99 drivers, this is a glimpse at your future. The steel pipes in the photo are some of the piles that will support the new roadway that will carry southbound 99 traffic between S. Royal Brougham and S. Holgate Street by the end of 2011. Look closely inside the pit and you can see workers welding one section of pipe to the other while a crane holds the top pile in place. The piles will be driven close to 300 feet deep in some locations.
