The path forward for a new bridge, approach and roundabout

Looking west, the approach to the new Wapato Way East bridge in Fife, WA becomes more apparent.

The existing Wapato Way East curves to the right at the bottom of the photo toward the 70th Avenue bridge.

The new road, built in 2020-2021 takes travelers over I-5 on the new four-lane bridge that has wider sidewalks and connects to SR 99 via a new roundabout.

Building the new Wapato Way bridge paved the way for the rest of the SR 167 Completion Project, which is part of WSDOT's Puget Sound Gateway Program.

The completion project adds a new expressway from SR 167's end point near Puyallup to SR 509 near the Port of Tacoma.

The Puget Sound Gateway Program combines the SR 509 Completion Project in south King County with the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County to complete critical missing links in Washington state's highway and freight network. These projects provide new connections to the state's ports, improve freight movement and reduce congestion on local roads and highways. Both projects have multimodal benefits with miles of new trails, sidewalks and shared use paths.
