Old, battered expansion joint

This is one of the 33 year old bridge expansion joints on westbound I-90 at the East Channel Bridge.

The expansion joint is one of two that will be replaced during work scheduled to occur July 18-25.

In the middle of the joint, you can clearly see where it is breaking apart. The rubber seal in the joint is also broken and allowing water to leak into the joint.

The expansion joint must be replaced before it fails completely and severely damages cars and compromises the integrity of the bridge. Expansion joints are critical to how a bridge functions allowing it to bend and move with changing weather and traffic loads.
