B&O SD40-2 7601-7618, Riverdale rs
A pair of B&O SD40-2s are on the headend of a freight just leaving Barr Yard. The 7601 and 7618 are closing in on the interlocker at Dolton while the balance of the train is passing under the Illinois Central overhead, and the tail end is still in the yard at Riverdale. It was always a fight for the Chicago Terminal dispatchers to get a train rolling out of town. And just after you got him OK'd through Dolton, then the battle began to get the train through State Line and Calumet interlockers, then Clark Jct and finally Pine Jct. The two big six axles were one tenth of Chessie's SD40-2 fleet. The Big Cat loved the four axle version, rostering several hundred GP40s and GP40-2's, but only twenty SD40-2's. I managed only one shot of this eastbound at Riverdale, don't know why, but I managed to catch him at Calumet Park. For some reason, I was shooting Kodachrome 25 at the time, a poor selection considering the clouds and overcast. F4 at 1/125 sec was the best I could do here, using a skylight filter. I was always looking for film speed, in order to keep my shutter speeds up, but ASA 25 was not going to do it. Otherwise, it was a great film, very true in color and long lasting.
