SD60E's at 79 mph
Today marked the first run for the two NS SD60E's, 7034 and 7035, on their new assignment. They are now the dedicated power for NS's office car train. They had brought the train into Chicago Monday night on a deadhead move and departed Ashland Ave with all the brass aboard. The two rebuilds have been worked on to make them capable of running at 79 mph. There's a little irony in the fact that the NS had two perfectly good units, already capable of attaining passenger speed, and with a lot more style than any freight unit could provide. They sold the F's, then turn around and haul two old freight units out of storage and spend all that money to make them run like the F's. Whatever, the 7034 and 7035 did the job well, looking all shiny and clean. And the horns sounded great, especially with the whistle artist at the throttle. We caught the action at the east end of Pinola, IN. Yeah, it was crummy and we dodged a lot of rain, but it was still worth seeing two SD60's run faster than they ever have.
