Dispatcher's Dilemma, Part Two
Well, Part One was going well, with the northbound freight, Q642, rolling north through Dyer and getting on the Elsdon Sub, clearing the Monon. Then things started going downhill. Barr Yard started hedging on taking Q642 into the yard, meaning that with Q643 and Q642 both out on the Elsdon Sub, there was no route for the Hoosier State. With the belief that the passenger train was still in the hands of the UP, the RB dispatcher cut Q643 loose, sending him down the Monon Sub to get in the clear at Shelby, the only decent siding between Munster and Reynolds. Here's the southbound rolling through Dyer at about the scheduled time for the passenger train. Looks like he would make Shelby without delaying the Hoosier State, Then oops.....
