Southampton, Ontario, Canada, was founded by Captains John Spence and William Kennedy in 1848. However, French fur traders ran a trading post at the mouth of the Saugeen River (above) as early as 1812. Trading and fishing sustained the economy in those days. Lake Huron and the Saugeen River were the "roads" of all transportation.
