The church was founded in 1752 in Midway, Georgia but the original building was destroyed during the American Revolution. The current structure was erected in 1792. It was occupied by the Union Cavalry of General Judson Kilpatrick during Sherman's March to the Sea but was left standing when the troops left to rejoin Sherman's main body of troops. Two church members were signers of the Declaration of Independence: Button Gwinnett and Lyman Hall The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places..
