. . . only temporarily unaware of their position.

Most aeronautical charts and plates are now online. Here's a couple for Martha's Vineyard KMVY. The one on the left is for Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and the other for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). The difference is obvious to some but for others, VFR means the pilot has visual contact with the ground at all times; otherwise, one files an IFR flightplan.

Once an GA individual is trained, flying IFR even in fair weather is often desirable.
