Quimper. The Odet river and the Préfecture in the distance (the administrative building of Finistère.)

Quimper, the capital of the area known as Brittany’s Conrnwall (“Cornouaille”). It is an ancient city recognized for its artistic and historic significance through the label "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire".

Quimper was originally settled during Roman times. By AD 495, the town had become a Bishopric. It subsequently became the capital of the counts of Cornouailles. In the eleventh century, it was united with the Duchy of Brittany. During the War of the Breton Succession (1341-64), the town suffered considerable ruin. In 1364, the duchy passed to the House of Montfort.

The town is crossed by two rivers, the Odet and the Steir.

Quimper is also a center of faïence. Hand-made and hand-painted pottery are produced at the centre of Henriot-Quimper, which is open to the public, as is the Musée de l'Alambic.

Quimper has two theatres (Cornouaille and Max Jacob).
