Julian Walker says: Huddersfield is my town of birth and where my family comes from. The Corporation was a staunch trolleybus operator and withdrawals did not start in earnest until the 1960s. When the system closed in July 1968 there were just six remaining in the United Kingdon, and within four years these too were gone - neighbouring Bradford was the last to close, in March 1972.

Julian Walker says: San Francisco proves that clean, silent electric trolleybuses still have a role in the modern world. In SF's case the vehicles are powered by cheap, renewable hydro-electricity, and are ideal for coping with the city's fearsome hills.

Julian Walker says: Night shot of Reading 181 at the Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum. With saloon lights ablaze and carrying passengers, the scene is wonderfully evocative.

Julian Walker says: Trolleybuses are stil relevant in San Francisco. Powered by cheap hydro-electricity, they are ideal for the city's hills. Here a trolleybus on route 24-Divisadero descends towards the Castro.

Julian Walker says: Of course, trolleybuses are not infallible. The transfer of passengers from a stricken trolleybus adds a note of realism.

Julian Walker says: This is an ex-Reading machine, one of five sold to Teesside Municipal Transport after the Reading system closed in 1968. The Burlingham-bodied Sunbeams were purchased by Reading in 1961 in happier times when there were no plans to abandon the system. Teesside had planned to keep trolleybuses operating until 1973, but found it increasingly difficult to obtain spare parts and closed the system in April 1971. That left just Bradford still operating trolleybuses in the UK, and within a year they too were gone.

Julian Walker says: If you have trolleybuses, you need wiring to provide the power supply. Rather like inverted railway lines, trolleybus overhead has "points" where routes diverge. This example is right by City Hall in San Francisco.
