Toynbee Hall
Toynbee Hall was the first of the University Settlements that were created in the East End from 1884 onwards. It is named after Arnold Toynbee, who first proposed that graduates from Oxford and Cambridge Universities should spend time in the East End helping those less fortunate than themselves. Clement Attlee, who went on to become Prime Minister after the Labour Party's spectacular post-war election victory in 1945, was honoured for his work here.
