Bird's-Eye View of a Great Blue Heron

As I walked along the shore of the mostly-frozen lake in the morning hours, the temperature struggled to reach 20 degrees. Photographing interesting and unusually beautiful ice formations along the banks, I was stopped by the sight of a great blue heron scarcely two paces in front of me. I attempted to quiet my heart and tried not to breathe as I raised my camera and clicked off a few pictures. As I took a few close-ups, my breath fogged up the viewfinder. I realized however, that there was something wrong with this picture.

(Taken at Patriot Lake at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis.)
