Female Brook Trout in spawning behavior DSC_5692

Female Brook Trout (Salvelineus fontinalis) in the act of digging a nest. She fans her tail hollowing out a redd, a depressionn in the stream bed into which she lays her eggs. The location is picked so the swift stream current does not scour the eggs downstream. The strips in her tail and on the stream bed is the sun filtering through riffles on the surface of the stream. Image taken in Rocky Mountain National Park of Colorado.
