AsheRat - R.I.P. Dear One
I honestly don't know what happened. Four days ago, when I posted the previous picture of him, he was fine. He hadn't come out of his room much on Thursday, but he appeared to be fine when I looked in on him throughout the day. Yesterday, he ventured out for a drink and he practically laid his head right in his bowl.
When he was done drinking I scooped him up and he actually let me. The old wound on his side seemed to have exploded like a bomb went off under the skin. The only thing I can think of is he developed an abscess under it somehow and it ruptured. I cleaned him up and applied a wet cloth to it trying to see through caked blood what the trouble was (Of course, these things always happen on weekends, but there would have been nothing any vet could have done) His side was open and raw, a good bit of fur was missing. I'd never seen anything like it occur so fast.
6 hours after he came out of his room, he passed away in my arms, wrapped up in a fleece blanket. For those 6 hours he let me hold him, rub his head, and tend to his wound, making every effort to see that he was comfortable.
Farewell AsheRat, you were one of a kind and always did things your own way. Your death was much like your life, a mystery that you kept to yourself.
