On the near end of the fireplace mantel is a rotisserie. It is attached to a weight hung from the "S" hook that unwinds the string wound around the spindle of the lower gear. This drives a couple of reduction gears that drive the spit near the floor. The vanes at the top help control the speed.

 

Another important individual to the colony was the King's Engineer. He acted as a surveyor and construction supervisor and enforced the rules that governed the physical development of the settlement.
