queer sausages
My initial encounter with the sausage tree, Kigelia africana, was under the great spreading canopy of a fine example on the banks of the Zambezi River. After a humbling encounter with a family of amazing elephants my fellow travellers and I were hosted at breakfast where we were served orange juice and sausages. Those sausages, we were assured, had been harvested from that tree!
In keeping with the Queer Nature theme featured here in the Temperate House, I suspect all is not as it seems. Could the notion of a sausage tree be up there with the not unreasonable advice to be aware of drop bears? Methinks this is not the source of sausages; not even the Frankenfood varieties so beloved of vegans.
But wait, this isn't the only misunderstood harvest! There is a wonderful documentary — a little dated now but still relevant today — of the spaghetti harvest in Switzerland: www.bbc.com/news/av/world-68707739
