Nash Motor, a Division of Nash-Kelvinator, began producing automobiles in1918 and had carved a niche in the compact-economy car market with its introduction of the Rambler in 1950. In 1954, it introduced the tiny Metropolitan, which was built by Austin Motors of England solely for the North American market. Financially struggling Nash merged with Hudson Motors in 1954, creating American Motors Corporation (AMC), and allowing both Nash and Hudson dealers to offer the new Metropolitan.

During the 1970s AMC acquired JEEP, produced the Javelin muscle car, Pacer and Gremlin sub-compacts and was later bought out by Chrysler Corporation in 1987.
