Carte de Visite of May Acland, 1860s
The most striking thing about this image is the highly unusual name tag, hand-written but onto what I believe must have been commercially made 'tags' that fold over the top of the images, like Victorian scrapbooking. I've never seen anything like this before!
But also, as commentators have spotted, there is a ball of wool, and on closer inspection of the original I can see that she is holding knitting needles.
May Acland was the third child, and first daughter, of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 11th Baronet - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Thomas_Dyke_Acland,_11th_Baronet
May (or Mary) was born I believe in 1847 and I suspect this image was taken in the mid 1860s, when she was c. 18.
