Coming Down is the Hardest Thing

A Lisunov Li-2 in the colors of Malev - Hungarian Airlines approaching Hahnweide airfield in southern Germany. The photo shows the last operational Li-2, which has been restored and is now owned by the Hungarian Goldtimer Foundation.

The Lisunov Li-2 (originally called PS-84) is the Russian version of the famous Douglas DC-3, and was build from 1938 under license in the former Soviet Union. Even though it looks like a DC-3, there had been more than 1000 engineering changes in the construction, mainly to convert all dimension from U.S. customary units to metric units and to adapt the plane to the low temperatures in Russia. One of the most significant changes was the use of the Russian Shvetsov ASh-62 engine with only 1000 hp instead of the original Pratt & Whitney R-1830 with 1200 hp. The main advantage was a better fuel economy, and hence larger cruising range on the cost of a lower high speed.
