Frozen Grasslands of the Canadian Prairies

Although every bone in my body would love to trade winter on the Canadian prairies for sunshine and palm trees, I do have to admit that I would miss some of the beauty that only winter can bring. Start with a fresh layer of snow blowing on the open landscape, followed by frigid temperatures like minus 25 Celsius, and add to that a night and morning of fog (which brings about hoar frost) and the the landscape is transformed into a wintery wonderland. This photo is taken in such conditions. I like the way the fog adds such a mystery to the photo.

Immediately after I took this photo my faithful assistant (a 6 month old Aussie cattle / Aussie shepherd / border collie) came bounding through the scene with all the grace of a bull in a china shop, totally destroying the beauty of the grasses in the foreground.
