SpriteFire2
Sprite, the articulated firefighting robot. Sprite was originally built in 2004 for the Trinity Firefighting Robot Competition. See action videos at www.youtube.com/user/PBRobotics
Sprite is unique in its compound articulated steering method. See the other photos of Sprite for a more thorough description. Small gearmotors on each wheel propel the bot. In the 2004 configuration shown, 4 Sharp GP2D12 sensors provide hallway navigation information. This proved inadequate, so additional sonar sensors were subsequently added. A Hamamatsu UVTron sensor, hidden in this view, senses the flame. The small vertical board at the rear is the sound start module. This robot is designed and programmed to run backward as well as forward, so it does not need to turn around at the end of a hallway.
